While the trends are important to know about, having a well-defined digital transformation strategy is crucial to navigate them effectively. The strategy should encompass various stages of the transformation process, including auditing, planning, implementation, training, and monitoring, all aimed at using technology to improve business processes and customer experience.

Trend 1: More people are choosing Open Source platforms

Choosing open-source platforms is becoming a top priority in the digital transformation process.

Companies benefit from transparent pricing, security, full data ownership, and customizable features.

Transparent pricing – Open-source platforms provide clear and predictable costs, eliminating price hikes that don't align with usage and protecting companies from future platform-wide price increases.

Security – Enhancing security should be a part of any digital transformation process. For enterprises, Open Source enables them to host the software on-premises, making it not internet-facing and helping organizations adhere to regulatory compliance. For small businesses, self-hosting removes vendor/hosting lock-in, reducing expenses. Open Source also benefits from more people's eyes on the code helping improve the security.

Full data ownership – Controlling the digital supply chain helps organizations protect their PII, make their data more portable, and have higher control over what types of tracking they partake in.

Customizable features – When a company runs into a limitation, Open Source enables them to overcome it by developing it themselves or relying on a contribution from another entity. Having the source code ensures the digital platform can adapt to any future needs, such as modifying it to work with new technologies.

Open Source has clear advantages over closed source, making it an increasingly popular choice for businesses during their digital transformation process.

Trend 2: Decoupling is nearly always better

Another trend that's here to stay is decoupling the various platforms.

While companies may be tempted to gravitate towards an "all-in-one" platform for the seemingly simplified integration, the flexibility and composability that decoupled solutions provide often lead to enhanced scalability and agility, enabling companies to leverage best-of-breed technologies for each function.

Scalability – Choosing a coupled platform often makes businesses stuck. There is almost always some part of the platform that limits its ability to scale. The platforms have a harder time handling customized business processes, hindering their abilities.

Agility – When using a monolithic/coupled platform, it's exponentially more difficult and sometimes impossible to swap out one function of it. However, decoupled platforms provide a more Lego-like experience, which gives organizations the ability to pivot/adopt emerging technology, giving them a competitive advantage. While it's not always better to decouple, I strongly recommend that most businesses prioritize decoupling and finding the best digital transformation platforms the internet offers.

Best tools – While "all-in-one" platforms offer a broad range of functionalities, their commitment to integrating diverse features often leads to none being truly exceptional. Decoupling enables companies to compose their tech stack, implementing the most ideal tools to solve various problems.

There are numerous other benefits decoupled platforms provide, which is why we at Webstudio decided to focus on providing the best no/low-code website builder and the functionality to connect to any backend, including CRMs, databases, and CMSs.

Trend 3: Using a SaaS solution

Legacy systems hinder many companies. They cause slow iterations, increased security risks, and often limit the features that can be introduced.

Unfortunately, they can be costly to eradicate or modernize.

Business strategy has shifted from creating proprietary internal solutions to leveraging third-party solutions as much as possible. SaaS solutions help businesses meet evolving needs and improve efficiency.

Many digital solutions have evolved to be a part of a bigger ecosystem, ensuring compatibility instead of a closed-off ecosystem.

Adopting hyper-focused digital products on solving one specific need tends to create the best products and offer the highest level of compatibility.

Creating internal proprietary systems often leads to less agility and higher technical debt rather than improving operations or optics of your organization (I've been a part of organizations that intentionally reengineered a software solution that exists on the market for the sole purpose of improving optics to investors or acquiring organizations).

Trend 4: AI

It seems you go to any SaaS solution, and their website hero will say "... with AI".

Companies are going as far as entirely repositioning their business strategy to offer AI-driven applications.

While AI can improve just about every facet of business processes and the customer journey, consumers may have their guard up because many companies rush an AI feature to market just to stay on trend without really solving a problem or solving it well.

In my opinion, the vast majority of AI solutions have missed the mark.

The ones that have captured my use have done one or more of the following:

  • Provided AI-powered recommendations – Microsoft Copilot, for example, provides tremendous value by learning what you're doing as you're doing it and providing recommendations simultaneously, massively increasing productivity.
  • Automated daily tasks
  • Provided answers trained on developer documentation or other knowledge management systems
  • Used machine learning to derive insights from a dataset, assisting in data-driven decision-making

My word of caution is to approach AI solutions to create something remarkable and not just check off the "we have AI" box and carefully approach the notion of going through a business model transformation to accommodate AI.

"Create value that's hard to copy."

31% see the expected revenue boost and 25% obtain the expected cost savings
Source Harvard Business Review https://hbr.org/2023/07/the-value-of-digital-transformation

According to the Harvard Business Review, only 31% of large enterprises that go through a digital transformation see the expected revenue boost, and 25% obtain the expected cost savings.

They state, "We found that digital leaders are creating much more shareholder value than laggards, often by creating value that's hard to copy."

Personalization – The same article states that capturing user behavior and delivering a personalized user journey sets the laggards from the leaders apart. These efforts can range from marketing messages that trigger based on obvious interactions, such as somebody visiting a pricing page more than once, to more complex processes that involve data analytics or even machine learning to identify less obvious patterns users fall into and target them accordingly. Look for a digital experience platform that enables small businesses and large organizations to offer personalization.

Mobile apps and multi-channel delivery – Digital transformation strategies often entail creating a backend that enables content delivery to various frontends, such as mobile apps. Decoupling systems and ensuring high compatibility between them will make multi-channel delivery a reality.

Automation – Business goals in adopting new technologies are often to reduce expenses. Automation plays a pivotal role in this process, whether it's adopted for improving business operations or external customers, such as giving them a self-service option. Users want things now. Automation can provide a seamless customer experience.
